Jorrit van der Schot

‘My name is Jorrit van der Schot. My job for the Snow2Rain project is to see how both the ratio between snowfall and rainfall, and the snow conditions in general are changing in the area around Tasiilaq. I am working with data from snow measurements, weather stations, results from regional climate models, as well as satellite data.

Currently I am working as a PhD student for Snow Climatology at the University of Graz, in Austria. I am originally from the Netherlands, where I have obtained my bachelor’s degree in Earth Science at the VU University in Amsterdam. I have obtained my master’s degree in Climate Change at the University of Copenhagen. My master thesis was an interdisciplinary study on sea ice changes and glacial change in Ilulissat, west Greenland. I have learned a lot during the fieldwork I conducted in Ilulissat, during the summer of 2019. I was also lucky to meet many interesting and friendly people during my time there. During my master’s program I have become highly interested in interdisciplinary research. Therefore, I am happy to now work on the Snow2Rain project. I believe there are many benefits in conducting Arctic research together with local inhabitants. My personal goal for the project is to be able to clearly show the benefits of such an approach in a few years time. Hopefully by then we have results that are interesting to the scientific community as well as the local community of Tasiilaq.’
