Snow, ice & melt water: physical phenomena & foundation of life in the Arctic.

We explore changes from snow to rain &
their impacts on a local community in East Greenland.

The project goal

We want to understand how environmental changes, in particular the transition from snow to rain, are influencing quality of life in and around Tasiilaq. To do this, we want to use physical measurements and data from climate models, and combine these with local expertise on this topic. We explore the specifics of the transition from snow to rain for the Tasiilaq region. With these findings we hope to better understand the challenges of living in a changing environment and support ways of living in the Arctic in the future.

Within this project scientists and local people from Tasiilaq shall be working together. The residents’ concerns, ideas and narratives guide our project.

In Austria, the University of Graz and University of Vienna are working together, connecting the academic fields of natural and social sciences. The project is financed by the Austrian Academy of Sciences. Currently, five researchers are working on this project. Find details about the project team here
